Geometry of Light

Anatoly Paterilo

October 2015

About the exhibition

Paterilo's evocative landscapes and enigmatic interiors explore the power of light, its elasticity and ambiguity. His technically masterful, hyper-realistic oil paintings of rural nature, everyday buildings and simple interiors are presented at such strangely unexpected angles and moments that they take on a mysterious quality and mood. In his attempts to reduce the world around him to its essence through the interplay of light and shade, his work contains a powerful internal stillness, which suggests the calm before the storm. The relationship between reality and illusion, the conscious and the sub-conscious, is questioned as the real becomes surreal. His creative interests mirror the long-standing scientific pre-occupation with making the invisible visible and reflect an intersection between art and science - a theme which runs through many of our exhibitions.

Anatoly Paterilo completed the renowned Tver (Venetsianov) School of Art in 2008 and graduated with distinction Moscow (The Russian Academy of Art) in 2014.

He was awarded a number of 'named scholarships' during his studies and was winner of the Russian Arts Help Annual from the V. Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (The Russian Academy of Art) in 2014. He was awarded a number of 'named scholarships' during his studies and was winner of the Russian Arts Help Annual Art Award in 2011. As well as across Russia, Paterilo's work has been exhibited in Italy, Brazil and England, where it is found in private collections. We are very excited to present his first solo show in the United Kingdom.
